An introduction to Pebble Press and my process of creating zines.
Pebble Press
My Process
Timeline: Spring 2026, 3 Weeks
My Role: Designer
Program(s): Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign
Creating a process book was a requirement for my undergraduate thesis project—a large, final piece or body of work developed to showcase my skills and interests as a designer. Process books tend to be done last minute and treated as an afterthought. I wanted to make mine into something I could trade or sell with other artists and creators, something I could edition that would also showcase my design skills.
While developing Pebble Press, it was suggested that I create some sort of press kit. Something I could hand out to introduce and explain Pebble Press as a micro press and communicate who we are. It made sense to merge the two: to show my process, which is vital to the work Pebble Press produces, while also explaining the development and brand of Pebble Press in a single kit.
That’s when I came upon a stash of old VHS tapes in a free pile at my school. I thought that if I were to make a kit with multiple components, a repurposed container could act as the perfect shell, something sturdy to make the kit feel more like an object.
Designing a publication using the Pebble Press brand guidelines was a blast. While far from refined, exploring and playing within those guidelines – building pages and spreads, pushing the typography in unexpected directions, and assembling a real-life example of the micro press – became a reflective experience. It was exciting to see all the different moving parts come together into a single VHS tape case.
